{April 28, 2008}   Bollywood Ups and Downs

Everytime a celebrity couple gets married…its hot news!! Even serious news channels like NDTV and CNN IBM pick up on the wedding news and play it on prime time TV. We are a movie-crazy country for sure. I think it’s part of India’s charm…we really like our cinema…and go all out in showing it. The reason perhaps is that, movies give everyone an outlet. A way to escape monotony and real life, temporarily. The world of Indian cinema is really vast, and it’s fascinating.

More than the onscreen stories, the off screen ones seem to be of interest to the Indian audience. And our media does more than enough to feed this need. Okay, so everybody gets what they want..the public- its entertainment, the media – its viewership.

I thought about all this as I watched a particulary entertaining video of Saif and Kareena in Tashan. So they’re getting married sometime soon. The ‘official’ announcement is allegedly out but no one seems to have recorded that. So as of now it’s only word of mouth.

{April 25, 2008}   Ishtylish Flop!!

So Tashan isn’t all that it’s hyped up to be!! Well, Thats what happens to movies that build up too much expectation. The only saving grace for the movie is its music. Great stuff. Especially this track. I also quite enjoyed this quiz on the movie.

These days animation films are faring better than the regular ones. Could it be that the Indian audience has matured to actually differentiate between bullshit and real cinema? Maybe so. I would anyday choose to watch a ‘Madagascar’ over a ‘Krazzy 4′. If you are into animated films, this is the site to visit.

Coming back to Bollywood. There are a spate of new movies in the pipeline. Amir Khan will be seen in Gajini, Sharukh in Billoo Barber. I think Salman in fizzling out. Amitabh has a bunch of films in the making. I picked up the DVD of Cheeni Kum from Seventymm yesterday and watched it last night. It is a brilliant movie. Kind of makes you change your perspective about age.

{April 23, 2008}   Once Upon A Time…

Remember the time when you heard a magical story and really believed it was true? Remember when you believed in happily ever after? And in a land far far away…? The innocence of childhood is a treasure that age steals from all of us. But every now and then, it’s necessary for all of us to go back to being children; to find that innocence again and just give in to a fantasy. For me, it was this quiz that brought back wonderful memories. Vivid colours, magical tales and beautiful picturisation; that’s what an animated movie offers today. Inspite of knowing in your ‘practical’ brain that none of this is real, there’s a little part of you that gets lost and very involved in the film. I love the feeling.

I watched Dr. Seuss Horton Hears a Who over the weekend. A beautiful film. It’s funny and incredibly interesting. I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys a meaningful animation film.

{April 21, 2008}   Filmystery

I’ve been totally hooked on this very entertaining film puzzle called Filmystery on Seventymm! It’s absolutely the best..! Has me going back for more! You need to spot movies in these posters that have like all sorts of things in them..very cool!

Over the weekend I watched a movie ‘An inconvenient truth’…it’s an eye opener. I learnt so much about global warming and now I have big plans to curb it. I don’t know how I can change the mindsets of a billion people, alone…but I suppose every task seemed impossible before it was accomplished. Stopping global warming is no longer a choice..it’s a mandate. Very soon, there will be no option but to live a more eco friendly life. We cannot go on dumping plastic anywhere we please..cannot sit around twiddling our thumbs, while the earth slowly gets warmer. One day, we’ll just be sitting in our offices/homes minding our business, pretending like global warming will not affect us, and boom! We’ll be underwater…

Sounds funny? Well..it’s really not. But ofcourse, humans are desinged and destined to deny. We will as a race, perish in the face of a natural calamity because we choose to ignore what’s staring us in our face today.  HUmans – we are the most intelligent species on earth..way to go!

{April 18, 2008}   Pyar Hua…

Hey, I took this really nice quiz today! It was about the world of Indian cinema about 30-50 years back. It transported be back to the time when films were made in black and white, and the music still had soul it. Have you ever sat down and listened to the lyrics of an old song…say, Ramaiya Vasta vaiya for instance. It’s so beautiful, it gives me goosebumps. Every word written with passion. The lyrics added flavour to the movie itself. There is this one line from the famous song ‘Pyaar hua ek raar hua…,’ that goes “Main na rahoongi, tum na rahooge, phir bhi rahegi nishaaniyan.” It’s a line that will bring tears to the eyes of any romantic. If you have ever been in love, you will understand the depth and the emotion that went into this one line.

Now imagine, every line, written with such passion. It’s no wonder that our old movie songs are so popular even today, around the world. If you haven’t seen the movie Shree 420. You really are missing out on something. Even if you have, watch it one more time and notice the subtelities and the passion that cannonizes this movie. I picked up a great print from seventymm yesterday. I would recommend it.

{April 17, 2008}   Sugar and Spice

I Found this video of the movie Hope and a little sugar on Seventymm. By the looks of it…this should be a good movie. The last couple of movies I watched have more or less flopped. Maybe this movie with a less glittery star cast will stand out from the rest.

Having lost hope in the recent movies, I’ve temporarily turned my attention towards songs. This song from Race really rocks! Considering the poor quality of most movies today, I think Race is the winner among losers. A stupid movie, but entertaining nonethless.

It’s funny man Arshad Warsi’s birthday on 19th. He’s apparantly had a really tough life..orphaned at 14…growing up on the streets on mumbai.. well, I always thought he was a spoilt rich brat. How deceiving appearances can be.

Nothing exciting happening this friday..hopefully there’ll be something to talk about next week.

{April 15, 2008}   Bollywood Ishtyle!

Style rules the bollywood roost these days! Everything has changed from how it was even two years back. Exotic locations, minimal clothes, trendy hairstyles/facial hair, sleek imported cars…and actors who change their look for every movie…! Does all this make the movie sell ?

Yes!!

The Indian audience is starved for style…a lot of people would go watch Tashan just to see Kareen in her new avtar..! Apparantly she has also donned to bikini in the movie..well.. looks like Bollywood is catching up with Hollywood.. FAST!

I think Dhoom was one of the first movies that broke the mould of conventional style in Bollywood. The actors were all young and goodlooking… Team that up with some hi-fashion clothes and throw in a couple of bimbettes…! You have the perfect recipe for a Bollywood Masala movie. The storyline may not be great..choke..ahem..cough cough.. okay..the storyline may suck, but people still watch the movie for the ishtyle!!

Continuing my fixation with quizzes…I thought this one on Tashan was quite entertaining. By the way, that’s one movie I definately want to watch..inspite of being absolutely certain that it’ll have a incredibly stupid storyline… :D

{April 14, 2008}   Bollywood Calling

I tried getting tickets for Krazzy 4 this Saturday. No hope in hell! Bangalore is by far the most populated small city I’ve lived in. Anyway, I settled for “The Blue Umbrella,” a beautiful movie by Vishal Bharadwaj. I have been looking for this movie for a long time. Each time, either the print wasn’t good or the DVD was unavailable. Finally I got an excellent quality DVD at Seventymm. The movie is a must watch if you enjoy off beat cinema.

I hope I get to watch both You Me aur Hum and Krazzy 4 this week. Meanwhile, my addiction with quizzes continues. I took this excellent quiz on You Me aur Hum. It compensated for not being able to watch the movie over this weekend.

Bollywood as a concept fascinates and repels me equally. I hate how pretentious the industry is but love the world it opens up to the viewer. Those three hours spent in the theatre are an escape from reality and everyday tensions. A good movie takes you far away from your physical/geographic bond. It gives you a fresh perpective of life and makes you dream. It is like a breath of fresh air. I especially like the fantasy-themed movies. Harry Potter transported me to a different plane altogether. It took me days to shake off the hangover. Bollywood does not experiment with fantasy. If at all, they do make a fantasy themed movie, it will instantly be branded as a children’s movie. I think it’s time..in fact it’s long due.. for Bollywood break out of the silly naach gaana, sleazy clothes routine and explore more. Taare Zameen Par is one example of how trying something new can really pay off.

{April 11, 2008}   You, Me aur Hum

The movie has a fairytale look to it…I like these feel good films with a romantic touch. I did not think much of the movie’s promos until I logged on their official site. They have such a lovely story there, it made me want to watch the movie. Now, I dont have any big expectations from it…but I’d like to give it a chance nonetheless. It’s when you watch a movie with zilch expectations that you get impressed with what it has to offer. Okay, it’s not possible to watch it with no expectations at all, but maybe just keep your expectations low. It works! trust me. Oh..but before you watch it, here’s a glimpse of the fairy tale-like-feel I was talking about. There’s also this amazingly funny quiz I came across! I think am addicted to these quizzes..! :)

So Krazzy 4, as I have said before is another movie I really want to watch over the weekend. My friends dont seem to share my enthusiasm, which annoys me coz they just reject any comercial HIndi movie without giving it a chance… (it’s a different thing that they’re usually right about how badly the movie sucks). But one in ten times, I’m right, and movie is really worth watching. I hope Krazzy 4 is like that. Sadly for the Roshans, Krazzy 4 is still riddled with controversy… But I hear, they have managed settle all matters out of court. Good for them.

{April 10, 2008}   Ayesha Ayesha!!

Ayesha Takia is the only new actress, who I think, knows to act. She turned 22 today. I think it’s great that she’s doesn’t resort to skin show and stupid item songs to make an impact. I really liked her in Sunday. DId you know that she was the complan girl in that ad years ago?? There were lots of other crazy facts about her that i found out here. It was good fun! I also found some wallpapers of Ayesha… so if you’re a guy and find her cute…go download her onto your comp..!

I was watching this video of Sunday and realised that the movie really entertained me. I havent laughed that hard in a long time. I especially like the part where Irfaan Khan dresses up like Ravan and gets chased by a lil doggie…! :D hehehe…

Anyway, Krazzy 4 is releasing tomorrow, so is You, Me aum Hum. Am looking forward to watching both. I heard Juhi Chawla plays a psychiatrist in Krazzy 4…that should be good fun.
